XFOIL: High-tech groundsheet & tent footprint for gram-conscious consumers

High-tech material

Crystal-clear polyolefin film, 100% free of harmful plasticizers. At 19 micrometers thick, XFOIL forms the modern foundation for your ultralight setup. Unlike conventional window insulating film or other repurposed films, this material was specifically developed for outdoor use.

Protection & Weight

Lightweight without compromise. At under 20g/m², XFOIL is the lightest material on the market. Despite this, it acts as a highly tear-resistant protective shield for your expensive equipment. The foil is 100% waterproof and reliably protects sleeping mats and tent floors from thorns, sharp stones, and moisture. Less weight in your backpack, more lifespan for your gear.

MYOG & DIY Freedom

XFOIL is the ultimate material for the MYOG (Make Your Own Gear) community. The foil can be cut perfectly without fraying and folded easily. Ideal for custom-fit tent footprints, minimalist groundsheets, or creative DIY projects like ultralight rain ponchos. Maximum versatility with minimal pack size.

Stress demonstration

This video is intended solely to demonstrate the exceptional resilience of XFOIL, a film four times thinner than a human hair. It is an extreme test under controlled conditions.

Important note: We are aware that similar videos are circulating on the Internet. This video is purely to demonstrate the material's strength and robustness. However, we would like to expressly point out that our foil is definitely not designed to be used as hammock fabric, for several reasons. Please only use the foil in accordance with the recommended areas of application to ensure your safety.

2026: Worldwide exclusive. 50% less new plastic with the same performance.

Same film. Half the petroleum requirement. We've changed xfoil's raw material source without affecting its technical properties. From 2026, xfoil will consist of 50% recycled plastic waste (PCR).

For you on the trail, this changes nothing: The technical specifications are absolutely identical. Weight, extreme tear resistance, etc., remain exactly at the level you expect from xfoil. We are simply replacing 50% of virgin fossil material with existing plastic.

  • Identical performance: No compromises on toughness or durability.

  • 0% change in specs: Same weight, same dimensions, same reliability.

  • A true circular economy: We use waste as a raw material instead of using new petroleum.

Hard facts

Light

With just under 20 g per square meter (with a thickness of 200 micrometers) it is for what it can withstand, ridiculously easy. You can also simply shape the waterproof base with scissors if you want to save even more weight

Extreme

XFOIL has a very low tear resistance under tensile load, i. H. that existing holes or cuts do not tear open further. The tensile strength is also very high and can withstand heavy loads

Versatile

XFOIL can be used for a variety of applications such as: B. for tarps, tarptents or raincoats. So it's not just a waterproof tent pad, there are no limits to your imagination.

Durable

XFOIL is rot, mildew and moisture resistant, and resistant to UV rays and plasticizers used in some outdoor products

Compact

XFOIL can be used for a variety of applications such as: B. for tarps, tarptents or raincoats. So it's not just a waterproof tent pad, there are no limits to your imagination.

Uncomplicated

The processing is uncomplicated, since you can start right away with scissors and tape to bring them into the desired shape and size

How did XFOIL come about?

The Challenges of Ultralight Trekking As avid long-distance hikers with a passion for ultralight trekking and ultralight gear, we know the demanding requirements of this hobby all too well. Every single gram counts when you're covering long distances and want to enjoy untouched nature in all its splendor. As long-distance hikers, we often use ultralight tents and tarps to intensify the feeling of freedom, lightness, and closeness to nature. Material Tests and Experiments In our many years of experience as hikers and DIY gear builders, we've tried numerous materials to find the optimal ones, including for use as groundsheets or tarp bases. We've experimented with construction films, roofing tarps, and conventional camping groundsheets, as well as specialized products like Polycro Groundsheets and Tyvek Hardstructure. Some have even used secondhand tent groundsheets to save money or opted for camping groundsheets from Decathlon. But many of these solutions proved to be either too heavy, not durable enough, or didn't offer the desired protection. The Development of XFOIL – The Ideal Ultralight Groundsheet My professional experience in the plastics industry gave me the insight and resources to find the ideal material. After many trials, the result is XFOIL. This special ultralight groundsheet is not only waterproof but also extremely versatile. It's perfect for DIY or MYOG projects – whether as a tarp, tarptent, rain poncho, or even a stuff sack. Thanks to its light weight and flexibility, it's probably the best option for long-distance hikers and gear builders. XFOIL – More Than Just an Ultralight Groundsheet XFOIL is more than just a response to the needs of ultralight hikers – it's the result of my personal journey and passion. A product developed by a hiker for hikers. It not only protects against moisture and cold from below, but also reduces the overall weight of your gear without compromising performance. This transparent groundsheet is even better suited for transparent tarps and tarptents, offering an unparalleled view of the starry sky. Foil - but extremely thin Nevertheless, we would like to reiterate that XFOIL is an ultra-thin film. At only 19 μm thick, it is significantly thinner than a human hair (typically 50 to 100 μm in diameter). Therefore, despite XFOIL's robustness, it is important to choose your campsite carefully and check for sharp objects like thorns to prevent damage, just as you would with any other protective covering, and always handle the film with care. Such caution is necessary to ensure its longevity and effectiveness. When used as a tarp or tarptent, etc., the film is virtually indestructible from wind and weather. Therefore, special attention must be paid to the attachment points, where the entire force is concentrated. The technology behind it And since we frequently receive inquiries about the material, here are a few key points for the techies: 6-layer film, 19 μm, UHMWPE/HDPE/LLDPE + graphene, UV cross-linking – gel spinning for UHMWPE, melt extrusion for other layers, plasma post-treatment. P.S.: We won't address the question of when a groundsheet is ultralight here ;)
